Moving house is a tough job, with a lot of different tasks to take care of – sorting out moving arrangements, transporting your goods to your new home, and so on. Packing is one of the more time demanding jobs – you’ve got to organise everything, figure out what you’re taking and put it all away safely, only to unpack later on that day. To minimize the annoyance caused by this process, here are my top tips on how to make your packing job more efficient.

The obvious first step is to plan everything out. The whole moving process, that is – not just the packing. What companies are you going to hire, for example? Are you going to be renting a van or are you going to go for a fully featured moving service? Make this decision one of your first ones, because if you end up hiring a moving company, its a lot less work for you in the long run.

It might be a good idea to have a clear out, too. You know, search every nook and cranny of the attic and cupboards and look for things that you’re not going to take. This saves time and effort once you get to the move, because you won’t need to pack and transport that old microwave that you’ve not used for ten years. You never know, you might end up finding some things you can sell to make your move that much easier.

Get all of your materials together before the move, too. You know, proper sturdy packing boxes, big plastic bags, labels, tape and bubble wrap. Buy everything from proper retailers, don’t just use second hand materials. Using your old shoe boxes as a packing material might sound like a genius money saving idea, but its hardly going to hold up to the packing strain that is required of it. Same with the tape – don’t just use clear sticky tape, go for the heavy duty stuff.

You should allocate a few of your removal boxes for a specific room or type of item. That way, you can keep track of where everything is once you’ve packed them away. Plus, mark boxes with valuables in as ‘fragile’, so both you and the movers will know to take extra special care when handling them.

When you actually get around to packing, make sure to pack everything away safely and smartly. Don’t put heavy objects on top of brittle or bendy things, and use liberal amounts of bubble-wrap and packing peanuts when packing your breakables.

Make sure you take care when loading, too – this won’t be a problem if you’ve hired a moving company, because they’re trained to do everything the right way and provide you with the best possible service. But if you’re doing it alone – keep a couple of things in mind; Heavier and larger objects should be loaded first, and everything needs to be secured. Whether it to be to the flooring of the van via elastic or cables, or to a suitable rack. Be sure to double check that everything is tied down properly before setting off.

And finally, when you get to your new home, be aware of the unpacking order. The correct order basically depends on your circumstances – if it’s later on, then the bedrooms should be handled first, if it’s around dinner or tea time, then you should be thinking about the kitchen. It only makes sense.
