The Benefits of Hiring Storage Space When Moving House Temporarily

05 September 2014

Sometimes, you will be unable to move your things into your new home immediately, or you might be moving abroad temporarily. In these kinds of situations, it can be a good idea to make use of self storage. The main benefit is that you won’t have to sell all of your furniture and household items (if moving abroad for a few months for example), so will save time and money when it comes to relocating. If you are unable to get into your new home straight away, then often storage will be the only option, as you will likely have too much stuff for friends or family members to look after for you.

There are lots of storage options available, and lots of facilities, so if relocating, it makes sense to find one that is within a stones throw of your new property if possible. This will make picking up the items less of a journey and mean once you do have access to your new home, you can get everything out of storage and into the house as soon as possible.

Some removal companies will offer storage in addition to their removal service, so to save time and possibly expense when planning your relocation, try asking around and see what services various companies offer. It will often be a bit more expensive to hire a removal company and storage company separately, so if they are both offered under one company, all the better.

Before you settle on self storage though, have a careful think about what you want to store, and whether the security is adequate. Most storage facilities are patrolled by security guards and have a number of security measures in lace, so are generally very safe to store valuable items should you need to. On the other hand, if you have musical instruments such as a piano, you will probably need a temperature controlled environment to ensure the instrument is not damaged. This can cost more, so in some cases if friends or family can help you out you should make use of them.

When packing for storage, make sure you pack your items as securely as you would for moving home. Although they should not be moved around once they arrive at the storage facility, you may have no control over how they are packed in the container, so you should also make liberal use of clear labelling, especially for fragile items.

A more recent, and very beneficial service if you are temporarily unable to get into your new home when moving, is container hire. This essentially entails hiring a shipping container of varying size, which is delivered to your property. You can then pack the container yourself, and the company will then hold it in storage until you can get into your new home. This can be a very useful option, because you won’t have to worry about hiring a van to pick your goods up once you’ve moved into a new property, or where the storage facility is located. Be aware though, that sometimes container delivery can take some time, so it’s generally a good idea to make sure you have everything you need for day to day living with you and easily accessible while you wait for the rest of you items to arrive. Such essentials might include some basic pots and pans, clothing, toiletries and any other day to day items that you will not be able to live without.
