Contact Your Moving Company Before You Start Packing Your Valuables

There are plenty of different goods that you could consider ‘valuables’. There are expensive, electrical goods like laptops, tablet computers and televisions that cost hundreds of pounds to buy. There are sentimental items, that can come in both high monetary values (old jewellery) and low monetary values (a toy from your youth). There’s also pieces of paperwork you should consider valuable, like insurance documents, birth certificates and cheque books.

The thing that all of these items have in common is, naturally, that you really don’t want anything to happen to them under any circumstances. For this reason, you will want to do the best packing job possible.

Before you do that though, you really should contact your removal company. In fact, you should do this before you properly finalise a business contract with them. They need to know what items that they’ll be transporting, so they can properly prepare themselves by getting the right equipment. If you’re lugging along a big, complicated PC or stereo with a vast array of speakers, it’s best that the moving company knows about it. If you don’t and something unfortunate happens to these items, your compensation will end up taking a blow. Your movers reserve the right to refuse to take certain items, items that they feel they can’t guarantee the safety of. The only way you’ll know if you’re taking something with you that’s on that list is to let them know – don’t worry, they’ll usually offer you advice, alternatives or sometimes even special insurance (at a premium).

Of course, even when everything is cleared with your moving company, the safety of your valuables are not necessarily guaranteed. Sure, the mover will do everything in their power to keep them in one piece, but you also need to do your part. You’ll need to do a good packing job. If you can’t stretch to a proper packing company, here are some nuggets of wisdom;

• Take photos or videos of your valuable items, before and after they’ve been wrapped up. This allows you to show that you’ve done your part and are less likely to be denied compensation.

• When you’re doing the packing, be sure to get a hold of good quality packing materials. A set of good, sturdy moving boxes are one of the foundations of a secure move.

• Use plenty of bubble wrap and packing paper to protect the fragile ones from any accidental bumps and scrapes. Also, don’t store breakables in the same box as anything that is weighty.

• When packing up documents, keep them all together. You don’t want errant pieces of paper to get lost or scrunched up.

• Taking valuables with you in the car is a good way to keep some piece of mind. But if you’re going to do this, don’t leave your vehicle unattended for any length of time. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to strike.

So, take these words of advice, and let your mover know what valuables you’re bringing along on your journey. You’ve already minimised your moves strenuousness by hiring a mover in the first place, so don’t let something else get in the way. A removal done with everyone on the same page is far less likely to go wrong than the contrary.
